Yes, there is real cake. On our 7 inch pinata cakes the bottom half of the sphere is sponge cake and the top half holds the surprise fillings.

Our pinata cake shells are calibrated to be durable enough to survive delivery but thin enough to be broken by almost anyone, including a child.
The trick is temperature. Take the cake out of the fridge about 30 minutes before the smash. A shell straight from a cold fridge is much harder work than one that has had half an hour to come up to room temperature. If the cake is for a party of small children, tell us when you order and we will keep the shell at the thinner end of our range.
